Lemonade Stand

I received this email Thursday, from a new, super awesome friend:

My son "S" and his friend had a lemonade stand today to raise money for your run.  They ran around the park with the signs that made telling everyone that you were going to run for a whole day to raise money for a shelter for mommies and kids and that they were helping out by selling lemonade.  I was impressed that they were not shy and didn't get discouraged when people didn't buy.  They were really happy when they did make a sale.  It was a great experience for them.  They are looking forward to meeting you!

So yes, I am a slightly emotional being but . . .

Thank you so very much "L" for telling them about what I am doing.

Children are amazing.

They see [or hear about] a need and they know just how to help.

I thank you and your dear family and friends.

She contacted her neighbor Tom [this man is incredible. absolutely. incredible].

B o s t o n.

You. Own. My. Heart.

Am I disappointed with my time? YES.

Did I log WAY too many miles during the "taper" weeks? Ummmmm, YES. [76.5 miles from 4/11-4/16].

Do I know I played this right given my future plans for May 6th?

I. Love. Boston.

I Need YOUR Help.

I won't even beg for your donations in this post, promise.

[but you know you can always hit that "Sojourner Center" button at any freaking time.] ;)

After weeks of attempting to get a treadmill company on board for this run, I am facing HUGE disappointment.  My NordicTrack people stopped communicating [what the....] and other manufacturers and gyms seem to have all kinds of hoops to jump through.  (Remember, I run on a treadmill - - - don’t jump too great).

does anyone know of a willing manufacturer, gym or corporation that might want to have their mill on TV, advertised, adored and praised on my 24-hour run?

Anyone want to send emails to companies [cough* NTrack* cough] on my behalf?

I do have some backup mills, but for an endurance run like this I.Want.NEED. Good.Treadmills.

I will need two, because I have people paying to run with me [suckas ;)] for short varying lengths of time.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Training Run Before Boston

In the books.

My view:

Didn't watch TV or listen to music for first 6 hours.  Went unusually well.

My food [sorry took these while running]:

plus 5 powerade zeros

protein chocolate shots
one muscle milk

The recovery food of choice:

cocoa pebbles, rock!

Which equals:

Happy.  Emz.

23 days and counting.

24 days until 24 hours

I cannot believe this 24 hour event is only 24 days away.

In some ways, I wish it was tomorrow.

lucky me, I have a loooooooooong run on the books for tomorrow.

I consulted my coaches [Jeff, Chris KKovas & of course Dawn] .... who all told me what I kinda already knew.

While I am elated to be running Boston, this 24 hour treadmill marathon is my ultimate focus.  Right. NOW.

You bet cha I will still hit my goal to "BQ like a man in  2011" [maybe Jan 2012] . ;)

However, my first priority is to this "event", not to my "personal" goals.

So thank you guys! [Dawn, being one of the guys is the best compliment ever!]

Oh, and before I forget . . . .

Dawn [did I mention she's flying to AZ to be with me on May 6th?!?!?] found me the shirt I hope to wear for the last hour of my treadmill-a-thon.

freaking. love. it.

day. made.

Today, at church, I received an envelope.

It was handed to me by one of the girls I get to teach every two weeks.  If I was a really good teacher, I'd know her exact age but . . . . . I know she is 8 or 9.

It was white.

In pencil was written my name.

I waited until I got in my car to open it.

It read:

Dear [Emz] here is $5.00 for the donation.  My Mom told me why you are running on a treadmill for a long time.  I hope you get enough money for the people.  P.S.  Sorry if I spelled your last name wrong.

She didn't sign her name.

What an amazing girl.

Who knows how long it took her to earn this $5.00.  Maybe it was one week.  Maybe it was two months.  Doesn't matter.

but. what. I. do.  know. is . . . . . this huge act of giving / act of kindness from this young girl . . . .

made. my. day.

And I know it will make every day "my day" until May 6th - - - because I have put it on my wall right next to my TV to see 5 out of 7 mornings at 5am.

Thank you "MP".

TREADMILL Running for 390 Minutes

Reader email just in . . . .

a la "Manly Runner" :

"Just curious, what do you do when you run 44.14 miles on a TM?  Watch Oprah, ESPN, News?  If you tell me you don't watch TV my brain will implode.  Of course that is not humanly possible.  Wait are you human?"

First, Chris K, you should know.

e v e r.

Mostly, just so I can tell people, "I don't watch Oprah ever."
I think she's awesome.  I think she does amazing things with her celebrity status.  She is one heck of a business woman.

I just don't like the show.

Now, what did I do on this particular day for this particular long run?

[heee, heee, you are going to wish you never asked]

Hour one = nada, zilch, zero.  NO music, no TV, no view [it was still dark]

Hour two = BBC world news . . . mixed with answering work emails.

Hour Three = Nada.  NBC closed captioning wasn't working.  Local Fox news is ....well...crap and I was tired of the English accents on BBC.

Hour Four = NBC captioning back on!  It's TODAY show time!  I think Natalie Morales is insanely beautiful!

[few more emails]

Hour Five = TV off ...... turned on tunes. "All of the Lights" - listened to that song about 14 times.

[text from Mom, "stop now, that's long enough" ]

[ me]

Hoped back on......
Hour Six = texted my BFF Dawn.  LOVE her!!

Pita calls . . . "Are you freaking serious?  You know you have that little Boston Marathon in 12 days, right?"

Me:  Awwww, man, totally forgot. ;) bad joke.

Enter "stop" button.

Chris K.  Does this work for you?

Am I human? [be nice]

It. was. awesome.

I was the happiest tired ever!

Let's Talk Tuesday . . . Treadmill Running

So I have an awesome blog friend who emailed me this morning.

Here's the email:

I need treadmill help.

How do you pass the time?  What goes through your head? Do you play games with the pace and the distances?

I see us doing a fair amount of treadmill work throughout the next year to become stronger runners and I can't do this... mentally, I cannot handle doing anything more than what I did last night.  FOUR times I had my finger hovering over the stop button to bail and say screw it.

Don't know how you do it, help me!

My Reply: [it's long, you've been warned]

Like - - this freaking makes me so happy.

I know you know this but . . . I'm a little nuts.
This "finger hovering over the stop button" this is why I feel the treadmill has made me a stronger/more disciplined runner.

When most people go for a long run.....they run out 10 miles knowing they'll turn around and HAVE to run back.....
I always have the button to stop any time I want.
But ....... I want -- NOTHING to do with it.

I love how mental it IS!

Now on to the question, sorry. ;)

What I do to keep myself going depends on what type run I am doing.

First and foremost.  Always use an incline. No matter what the workout -- always an incline.

For speed workouts the mill rocks!
I have a list on my iPod songs that are the perfect length for the 800 repeats that I do. Time flies!

Hill workouts - which I, not so secretly, loathe - are made simple by the mill. I do love playing around with the incline. 1 min per incline level until I get to 12%. Then I go back down.

The Long run.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, my heart belongs to the long run.

This is where I get completely nuts/insane.
This is my run of runs.

I don't watch tv / listen to music for at least the first hour. I want to feel it. I want to take note of any soreness & let my mind wander. I'm sure you'd agree, some of the best thinking occurs on the LR.

After 90 mins or so I start doing 30 second strides about every mile.  That's just for my personal entertainment. ;)

From there I play with it. I'll watch tv for 30 minutes - usually news. Then turn it off and listen to tunes for 30. After 2 hours I play with the incline again. Up or down a .5%.

What goes through my head?

[of course]

I always tell myself - - [You bet cha I talk to  myself]. . . "Emz, your breathing is great. Only your legs are tired. You can rest your legs when you're done. "

"if it was easy more people would run on treadmills" - I love that one. ;)

But running on a TM is 100% mental. Not 90% not 99%

If you hop on thinking this is going to suck - - -   it. will. Without. Any. Doubt. SUCK.

You. Freaking. Rock,

LONG RUN day for me is tomorrow . . . . wish me luck!

Thank you to Peanut.  Thank you for the extra hugs and understanding. Thank you for the example you are.  You show me your love for me - - multiple times, each day.

Thank you to my Pita.  Thanks for knowing just how to motivate me.  Thank you for being "there".  "There", like, being present . . . at every race.  Thank you for always thinking big and expecting a lot from me. IFLYM.

That's. My. Phrase.

It's what I say to myself every-time I feel like quitting/stopping/giving up. It's my thing.

And everyone who has even met me once- knows it.
